Top 10 Mistakes of Web Sites

We advise all of our clients to avoid the top ten mistakes of web sites.

1. Clutter

Cluttered web sites are like messy rooms – they make it hard to find anything! Breaking this simple rule leads to an overwhelming home page.

2. Outdated Material

People are not forgiving of outdated material on the Web. Always consider your plan of updating the site before you even get started.

3. Bad Navigation

Remember: visitors may not come to your site through your home page. As a result, you should have a way to get to the top sections of the site on every page of your site. Contact info on each page is great too.

4. Untested Sites

Web sites will look different on various computers and browser versions. You should know up front what browsers your site supports and test on as many as possible before launch. We do.

5. Frames

Frames are rarely necessary for a site. Their fatal flaw is twofold: they make it impossible to bookmark interior pages of your site and very difficult for search engines to index your pages effectively.

6. Bad Graphics

A web site gives off an impression. If a site’s graphics are overused clip art, the company projects that image. That’s why the DIY (do-it-yourself) web design mostly doesn’t work.

7. Slow Download

Always test your site for speed. Your clients may not have as fast of an internet connection as you.

8. Bleeding Edge Technology

There’s nothing wrong with using the latest technology. However, you may be weeding out visitors who haven’t downloaded the latest and greatest browsers. Always have an alternate version.

9. Web Obscurity

Don’t think by launching a web site, you will magically attract millions of visitors. You should have a plan for how you will promote and market your site.

10. Text-Heavy

Keep it short and sweet.
